Katherine Heigl has really made her entrance into Hollywood.  I remember the first film she did with Gerard Depardieu, uh!  Now she is looking glamorous as ever on the red carpet for the Oscars.  I really just loved all that red on her with her blonde ringlets…it was just fabulous.  She's a real inspiration ladies.

I’ve been seeing Natalie Portman everywhere lately and I just adore her, I think she is just fabulous!  Her new movie The Other Boleyn Girl comes out this weekend with Scarlett Johansson and she looks fantastic in it..and so do the fashions!  I also can’t wait for her new shoe line to premiere, she is really doing everything and I just love it!

I think these shoes are just fabulous.  It doesn’t get much better than a black snake pump and for $20.99 from Target?  Slip these on with a pair of dark skinny jeans or a black dress and you’ll look fantastic ladies!

Hi Gals,

Here is a great question from Michelle in Montreal:

I have a very old dress from your collection circa 1993. I wore it to a Bar Mitzvah when I was 12. It’s a black mini-dress with a giant white off the shoulder neck with a giant black bow attached to it. I loved it and thought I was the belle of the ball, is it possible to still pull of that style? Should I continue to hold on to it, or should I let the 90's go?

First of all, I want to say...it sounds gorgeous, if I do say so myself.  In this age of being green, I think it's important to re-use as much as you can from your closet.  I am not for disposable attire.  Here is my suggestion...take the dress to a really great tailor in Montreal and talk to him or her about some options...shortening, adding sleeves, removing the bow or moving the bow.  This is a STYLE ALERT:  EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD TAILOR, ONE YOU TRUST. Spending $50 on good alterations is better that $200 on a new dress.  So Michelle, do some research and see what you uncover.

We are having a big snow storm today in New York.  I hope all you women in warmer climates are enjoying yourselves.  Here is a great idea if you have to face the cold tonight. I love the look of pairing evening clothes with a casual day coat.  I think it is so chic to wear a down jacket with a big furry collar with a great dress.  It's a surprise and looks great...and you'll be warm!

So the title of my blog is "Style is Free" and I know most of you think that to have style you have to go shopping all the time.  I am here to tell you otherwise.  Style can be FREE!  I know you all open your closets everyday and say "I have nothing to wear!"  Here is how to change that...because most of us have more in our closets than we ever know.  Spend a day this weekend...and go shopping in your closet.  Pull everything out and mix and match and mix and match EVERYTHING. Try on as many outfits as you can.  Mix things you've never dared or thought to wear together...and don't forget the accessories.  When you find an outfit you like, snap a digital picture of it....and create a "look-book" for yourself.  This will be your visual reference for the next time you say "I have nothing to wear."  Yes, you do and it's hidden right in your own closet.  Have fun!

I do think that every woman on the planet needs to have a great trench coat.  It is just A MUST.  There is nothing more chic than a gal in a wonderful pair of trousers, good shoes, a perfectly fit trench coat.  I suggest trying to find one that has a removable lining to keep you warm in the colder months.

So ladies...run, run, run to store and get a great trench coat...you'll think you're Brigitte Bardot!

It's Wednesday...that means it's time for me to open the iVillage mail bag...thanks again for all your great questions.

Here is one from Bonnie...she writes:

I am attending a wedding soon , (a friend of my son's) which I won't know hardly anyone and not sure what to wear. It"s on a Friday, 5pm. Weather is cold here. Thanks!!!

I always get asked about what to wear for weddings...and it's such a tough question.  Here is what I am going to say Bonnie...how about a suit?  A beautiful black or grey or navy, tux-ish suit would look wonderful. Wearing it with a blouse with a giant ruffle collar, or just a gorgeous red lace bra if you want to be sexy...or pin a giant red flower to the lapel and you'll make a wonderful statement.  A good suit and a pair or black patent leather pumps and you'll look fantastic.  Have fun at the wedding.

PS: You can find a good evening suit anywhere...Banana Republic, J. Crew, and a good department store will have a large selection of evening suits.  The one above is from Neiman Marcus.  And you'll be able to wear it over and over again. It's sort of the grown-up version of the "little black dress."

Spring is slowly approaching...so exciting!  I think a wonderful thing to do as the weather gets a little warmer is to get a great new haircut and color.  It will instantly change your style...and your life!  I think getting a great haircut is like oxygen to your soul.  Right now I think that Kristen Chenoweth has the cutest cut.  Now get on the phone to your stylists!

Hi Gals...Hope the week is going well.  I think every woman needs these trousers.  They are wonderful...and very affordable from Target.  I love the wide cut, you are going to be seeing more and more of that trend.  They are my Must-Have of the Week

I think Ellen Page from "Juno" is so cute and I am so thrilled she is nominated for an Oscar.  This time of year so many people ask me for fashion predictions...it's so hard to say.  I will say that I hope Ellen decides to wear something short.  She would look so wonderful and cute and fresh and chic.  In that sea of long gowns wouldn't it be wonderful to see that gorgeous short dress?  Call me Ellen and we can work something out.

ivillage-hat.gifI love that everyone is sending me their style questions...keep them coming.  Here is one that I thought would be helpful with the upcoming holiday weekend.   Angela writes:

Hi Isaac,

My husband and I are going to Atlantis/Bahamas the end of February. We are both in our 50's so no thong suits. Are there any other do's and don't's we should know about?  I am assuming dress for summer as in the states.

Well Angela...first, have a great time.   The last thing you should be thinking about while on vacation is fashion and style.  I would say for one pack as LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.  Traveling is a nightmare and not having to worry about bags makes a little bit of difference.  So don't take every dress in your closet.  I would suggest bringing a wrap or shawl for the plane.  I always travel with a cashmere wrap.  It keeps you warm on the plane and can be worn on cool nights or used a a beach wrap.  When you are on vacation you should wear things that you would never normally wear...be adventurous.  Wear a giant kooky hat that you would never dare wear at home (like the one above from J.Crew).  And forget that fashion "do's and don'ts" even exist!  You should look at the pictures later and say "What the HECK was I thinking?"

Hi Ladies...Let me first apologize...I've been so out of touch.  Last week was Fashion Week and it was so busy and so crazy and wonderful.  I showed my collection on Tuesday and it was a big thrill.  You can see the entire collection on my website...check it out.  The crazy thing is that no matter how exhausted one is from a fashion show, no matter how much post-pardum depression one feels the few days afterwards, one is always motivated immediately by the idea of the next. If you reminded any woman about the horrors of childbirth I don’t think you’d get a lot of them having second or third babies. Somehow the gods see to it that second-time mothers and fashion designers have terrible memories and we go forth into the unknown.
