Isaac Mizrahi: January 2008 Archives

The red carpet returned last night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.  It's always a hoot to watch these ladies parade up and down looking all coifed and beautiful.  I thought everyone looked great.  I always think everyone looks great.  Usually the actresses that are picked for the "Worst Dressed List" are MY FAVORITES!!!  What do I know?

I loved what Vanessa Williams, Christina Applegate, and Sandra Oh were wearing.  And Cate Blanchett always looks wonderful.  I only wish Queen Latifah were there...I think she is incredibly sexy!

I'll be back soon with my forecast thoughts on Oscar fashion!

Recently, I was asked by New York Magazine about some of my favorite things from the past year.  I thought it would be fun to share this list with you.   2007 was a fun year, except for the Yankees losing (again).  Anyway, here are some things that I loved in the past 12 months:

Enjoy! Now stop reading this and go make empanadas!

Hello, Hello.  You know for the all the years that I’ve been in the fashion business it has always been fun to predict what is going to be popular the next season.  I’m going to share with you what I think I am going to like, and what I may be a little tired of seeing.  Having great style is all about surprise, staying fresh, mixing what looks good on you and wearing what you feel fabulous in.  Not so much about wearing the latest trend.  It should be a nice little balance.  So here you go, my thoughts for 2008.  GOOD LUCK!

    • I’ve always loved the idea of women carrying an evening clutch all day long.  I think this idea is going to be much more widespread in 2008.  We should start seeing more and more larger sized clutches popping up everywhere.  I love a GIANT clutch.  I think it may be time to retire those dainty handbags with the chain handle that look stuffy.

    • Not just in 2008, but always in my life BOLD COLORS are in, in, in!  Royal blue, hot pink, red, green.  Oh, so much fun!  Pastel colors are less important now.

    • Speaking of color, what about sticking with one.  I love the idea of dressing monochromatic.  Mix up jackets, skirts, and shirts in the same color family.  All white or all tan looks wonderful on so many women.

    • PATENT ANYTHING!  I’ve always loved patent leather and it will continue making a huge splash in 2008.  HOORAY!  I think a little touch of patent with an outfit is just divine. A large patent belt, satchel bag or platform heel.  It’s instant glamour. These shoes are from my collection and can be found on zappos.com.

    • I know it sounds a little crazy but follow me on this one ladies.  Hats are going to creep into your wardrobe in 2008.  Not the colored cowboy hats we’ve been seeing (ship those directly to eBay along with those kooky flowered hats).  I’m talking about a gorgeous chapeau.  Like a tailored fedora or a sassy little cocktail hat.  In the right context, it could be just the right surprise you are looking for.

    • EVERYTHING IS COMING UP ROSES AND TULIPS AND DAISEYS.  Floral prints are going to be huge in 2008.  I am so thrilled about that.  Everything from your mothers’ dainty tiny-print floral dresses to giant flowers on coats and handbags.  I designed a couple of dresses for my fall collection that had beautiful large-sized hand painted flowers on them.  They are to-die-for.  Even in my new home fabrics collection I have a pattern I called “Mega Chintz.”  It is like floral chintz print on steroids.  It is so gorgeous.

    • A high-waisted, wide-legged trouser.  It gives women a gorgeous long leg and hides a few flaws in the middle, which we can all benefit from.

Hi all you iVillagers!  Happy New Year.  I am so so excited to now be a part of this wonderful website and community.  I guess all my years of pretending that the Internet was just a fad are over...so here I am, Isaac Mizrahi, with my own blog.  Try explaining that your 80-year-old mother.  Anyway more about me and my new career as a blogger.

So here is the deal, I've always believed that style and fashion should be accessible to everyone and that is what we are going to prove here.  I know most of you are just like me.  You wake up in the morning and the first thing you think about is "What the heck am I going to wear?"  or it's probably just, "OK, what is clean?"  Well step back, relax, move away from the closet.  I am here to help.

This is not about makeovers or telling you what you shouldn't be wearing or what you should never be caught dead in...this is about helping, guiding, suggesting.  I've been to many places across the country and for the most part all you ladies look good.  But how about looking GREAT?  Let's try it together.  I promise, it will be easy.

This blog will be more than just style.  It's a place for me to share my ideas with you. So, you'll see me write about things I love, from a great recipe to a movie that inspires me.

I am thrilled to be here and excited to hear from all of you.  Please send me your style questions, I can't wait to hear what's on your mind.  And if you want to ask me about what to make for dinner, I'll try to help with that too.

Check back soon.  I'll blog as often as I can.  You may even see me offering advice from time to time on the TODAY show (hopefully running wild through Meredith Viera's closet!).
